How presumptious is this sentence? ‘But zoom out far enough, and you’ll see that this decade of your life looks nothing like the last one.’ I’d like to know how the writer thinks they know what has occurred in the lives of other people for the last twenty years? I find this article presumptious and simplistic. It assumes everyone has the same lifestyle and comes from a positive background with all of life’s privileges in place, but this is simply unrealistic. I’m not saying underprivileged people cannot be thankful for what they have, I just think that difficult lives deserve a mention and this article assumes they don’t exist; as if everyone has some wonderful history to look back on and be grateful for. The bottom line is, no writer can know the heaven or hell that any reader has experienced, so they cannot be so arrogant as to think they know what other people should be grateful for.
