Thanks so much for your reply and I can see your point. However, I note that you say ‘if we put out the fire while it’s still small, there wont be a big patch of scorched earth’ but, in my experience, there are certain situations where the fire in fact doesn’t even start off small, but is more like a spontaneous explosion, e.g. when a loved one dies unexpectedly in a horrific way and then suddenly emotions can feel really wild and overwhelming and you don’t even know how to begin to control your misery and grief. I appreciate not all situations are extreme, but there are certain times when having a choice of how to deal with things doesn’t FEEL like an option; so I wouldn’t expect people to make wise choices when they are deeply distressed.
